Last night we found our way to La Esquina, a Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg. The food was great, though I have to take issue when restaurants do not provide salt on the table. I understand that the chefs may find their food perfectly seasoned, but I like salt, you know?

Pizza in the dark

When we realized we wouldn’t make it home in time for dinner, we called ahead for takeout from Franke Pepe’s in Fairfield, CT. And then we ate our delicious pizza, together, in the car, in the dark.
A last hurrah at the Mezza Luna

Sometimes it’s better not to know that the last time is the last time. Instead of preparing our own last Cape meal of the season, we did something relatively unheard of, we left the property and ate out… at a restaurant! It was tons of fun.
Mezza Luna is a classic Italian-American style restaurant in Bourne, Mass. It’s a side of ziti, red sauce, and Sinatra music type of place. It also happens to be an all-time favorite of André. Even baby Cal got in on the action, in a sleep-through-the-whole-thing kind of a way. To quote my mom: “We always have a great time at the Mezza Luna, no matter what.” And that, my friends, is the way to end a summer.
On the road again

You know what that means… Frank Pepe’s! In the car, of course.
Out again

For someone who claims to eat out rarely, my family sure has been eating out a lot. Today, an unplanned play-date at the park turned into a spontaneous dinner in the garden at Gianni’s. It was great to reconnect with neighborhood friends now that our kids have gone off to 20 different elementary schools around the city. What a nice bunch of kids they are. The pizza was good too.
Kindergarten Eve

My daughter is starting kindergarten tomorrow. She’s a bucket of nerves. I let her pick a dinner place, she chose Jahn’s and I forgot my camera. I guess she’s not the only one who’s nervous. I let her have a giant black & white cookie for dessert, which thankfully, she didn’t finish.

We checked something off of our vacation to do list tonight, and had dinner with friends at the Clam Shack in Falmouth.

On our way to the Cape last night we stopped for dinner at Frank Pepes Pizzeria Napoletana, as we always do on our way to the Cape. We had a half-cheese, half-bacon and a white pizza with anchovies and onions. Checkerboard cut for easy consumption in the car, and deelish, as always.
Table for two at Jahn’s
By Nina Max in dining out
It’s just Rose and me tonight, so we went to Jahn’s. It seemed silly to go, because we had just stopped at Farm Spot to pick up this week’s csa box, but I’ve still got this headache and Rose has been wanting to go for a while.
Jahn’s (pronounced Jans, as in the abbreviation for January, with an s) is an institution. It’s an old fashioned ice cream parlor restaurant that also serves typical fare. Our location here in Jackson Heights is the only Jahn’s restaurant left, there used to be a lot of them all around the NYC area. The food is what you would expect, I find the ice cream to be better than average. It’s worth a visit for the booth and counter appeal, and for the regulars who are generally very old and can be fun to observe.
We topped it all off with a gooey brownie from Three Little Birds Baked Goods, which we ate messily while walking home. Three Little Birds doesn’t seem to have a web site but can be found Thursday evenings at Farm Spot.
